About Garlic Knots

Garlic Knots are not just a snack; they’re a part of my family’s Italian tradition. Each batch I’ve tested has brought me closer to perfecting this classic pizzeria treat. They’re easy to make and perfect for gatherings, family dinners, or a cozy night in. Plus, they’re budget-friendly, using simple ingredients that you likely already have on hand.

  • Quick prep means they’re ready for unexpected guests.
  • Versatile base pairs well with various herbs or cheeses.
  • A family favorite that brings everyone together with each delicious bite.
  • Garlic knots are a staple in Italian-American cuisine, beloved for their comforting flavors.

Key Ingredients & Their Roles

  • Active Dry Yeast: essential for dough rise; check the expiration date to ensure potency.
  • Pizza Dough: forms the base with a chewy texture that holds flavors.
  • Garlic: provides the signature aroma and taste; fresh is best.
  • Parsley: adds freshness and color to the butter mixture.

How to Make Garlic Knots

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast and sugar with warm water; let it foam for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Whisk flour and salt in a large bowl. Create a well in the center and pour in olive oil and the yeast mixture; mix until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5 to 10 minutes until tacky.
  3. Shape into a ball, coat with olive oil, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot until doubled in size (90 minutes to several hours).
  4. Cut the risen dough into fourths. Roll each piece into a rectangle, slice into strips, and tie into knots. Place on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.

Pro Tips & Troubleshooting

  • I found that letting the dough rise overnight in the fridge enhances the flavor significantly.
  • If the knots don’t rise as expected, check your yeast; it might be inactive.
  • For a twist, try adding grated Parmesan to the butter mixture for extra flavor.
  • This recipe scales easily; simply double or halve the ingredients as needed.

Storage & Make-Ahead Guide

Store garlic knots in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for about 10 minutes until warmed through. From my experience, these knots stay soft, but freezing can slightly alter their texture.

Serving Suggestions

Garlic knots pair wonderfully with marinara sauce for dipping. They also make an excellent side with a fresh salad or serve alongside my Creamy Italian Meatball Soup for a cozy dining experience. Enjoy the delightful flavors!

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 7/8 cup warm water (105°F-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 cups bread flour can use all-purpose but bread flour will give you a crisper crust
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 14 ounces pizza dough
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup parsley minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Stir the yeast and sugar into a small bowl with the warm water and let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes, until it starts to foam.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the olive oil, then the yeast-sugar-water mixture. Mix this together to form a soft dough and knead for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • With well-floured hands, shape the dough into a ball and lightly coat with olive oil. Put it in a large bowl, top the bowl with plastic wrap and set it in a sunny spot to rise to double its size.
  • When the dough has doubled in size, cut it into fourths. Set out 2 large baking sheet and line them with a silicone liner or parchment paper.
  • Working with one piece at a time, flatten into rough 4 x 5-inch rectangles.
  • Using a sharp knife or pizza wheel, slice each dough rectangle into 4 long strips. Cut these strips in half in the middle.
  • Take 1 piece at a time and work it into the shape of a snake. Then tie it in a knot. Set each knot down on the baking sheet and repeat with the remaining dough.
  • Once all the knots are tied, brush them with olive oil. Loosely cover them with plastic wrap and let them rise again until doubled in size.
  • While the garlic knots finish proofing, preheat the oven.
  • Uncover the knots and bake in the oven until nicely browned on top.
  • While the garlic knots are baking, melt the butter in a small pot over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook gently for 1 to 2 minutes.
  • When the knots are done, take out of the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Paint with the garlic-butter-parsley mixture and serve.
