Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil for cooking
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups beef stock or low-sodium broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 6 oz. sliced cremini mushrooms
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • mashed potatoes for serving
  • roasted broccoli for serving

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, oregano, and salt. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.
  • Shape the mixture into four oval patties, about ¾-inch thick, ensuring they are uniform for even cooking.
  • Heat the avocado oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 3 minutes on each side until they develop a golden crust.
  • Reduce the heat to medium. In the same skillet, add the butter, allowing it to melt, then whisk in the flour until smooth without lumps.
  • Pour in the beef stock gradually, whisking well, and add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder. Stir to combine, then add the mushrooms and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover the skillet and let it cook for an additional 10 minutes until the patties are fully cooked through.
  • Serve the Salisbury steaks over a mound of mashed potatoes, generously drizzled with the rich mushroom gravy on top.
