Kansas City Barbecue Sauce

This homemade Kansas City barbecue sauce strikes the perfect balance of sweetness and heat, making it a must-have for your next cookout!

Ingredients
  

  • 5 tablespoons butter for sautéing
  • 1/2 medium onion finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • 2 cups tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons paprika
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon chipotle powder optional for heat
  • Kosher salt to taste
  • Cayenne to taste

Instructions
 

  • In a pot over medium heat, melt the butter until it’s bubbly and fragrant.
  • Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the onions are softened and begin to caramelize.
  • Stir in the chopped garlic and sauté for another 2 minutes, allowing the aroma to fill your kitchen.
  • Pour in the tomato sauce, apple juice, apple cider vinegar, and brown sugar, stirring to combine everything.
  • Add the spices: paprika, chili powder, and optional chipotle. Let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Before serving, adjust the seasoning with Kosher salt and cayenne to your taste. This sauce is perfect over ribs, chicken, or pork!

Notes
